1.       The most common nowadays format for storing full-color photographic images with the use of data compression is JPEG. It was started in 1982,Possible Picture Formats in Photoshop Articles when the International Standardization Organization (ISO) has established Photographic Experts Group-PEG. This organization has dealt with the transmission of video, images and text via digital communications channels. At the heart of the so-called JPEG is a compression with losses. This means that the compression of the image is due to the discarding of insignificant details. The person is not able to tell the difference between the compressed image and the original. However, the difference in sizes of the corresponding files may be significant.

2.       Since the graphics package Adobe Photoshop is one of the most common means of image processing and preparation of web graphics, its internal image format, PSD, is used widely.

PSD format is developed simultaneously with the Photoshop program; it is necessary to store the items, which are introduced in new versions of the application. This maintains a full backward of compatibility formats. If a file is saved in Photoshop 5.0, you can still open it in Photoshop CS 2 with no loss of image elements and qualities. It should be noted that some elements of the updated versions of PSD format cannot be read in earlier versions of the program.

3.       TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is one of the most common formats used in the preparation of graphics. This format is the de facto standard for image in the printing industry. Adobe Photoshop can save additional elements of the image in TIFF format, such as guide lines.

Another feature of TIFF format is an option to save multiple images with their own set of attributes and properties (tags) in a single file. This makes it similar to the GIF, but it cannot create animated images.

4.       The BMP may also be used for data storage without loss of quality. This is the native format of Windows that is used for the purposes of the operation system. In contrast to such formats as TIFF or PSD, BMP format does not provide the color correction. This means that you cannot guarantee that the recipient will see your file image in the colors you have defined.

5.       RAW format is designed to store all the information about the image taken with a digital camera. In this file format information is recorded with a sensitive camera matrix without any changes. In addition, the file records data about the changes made during the correction, with the white balance, saturation, brightness, contrast, exposure and other settings.
