The fastest way to succeed and grow as a person in the business world is to be coachable. Everyone at one point in their lives start from the bottom. Some people stay at the bottom and others grow and succeed with greatness. Who do you want to be?

When you’re in both high school and college, it is extremely crucial that you participate in as many internships as possible. The more internships you have, the better off you will be, however it’s not enough to just participate, you need to be coachable. You need to be aware of your surroundings and have a good attitude. You must act interested and want to learn about how the business works.

Internships simply teach you about that business. They give you the opportunity to engage in an amazing learning experience. If you don’t want to be there, don’t. You won’t get much out of it, if that’s the case. You learn things that you don’t necessarily learn in school. You see how the real world works and how to navigate around those real life situations. 

Mentors are there to guide you and lead you in the right direction. They help you understand how everything works and catch you when you fall to get you ready for the real world because once you’re in the real world, there won’t be anyone there to catch you when you fall.

In order to be coachable you must be, humble yet confident. Ask a lot of questions to show engagement. You need to be independent, yet respectable. Don’t act like your opinions are better than others, this shows arrogance. Don’t take things too personal. Business people tend to be more blunt and honest, that’s just how they are.

Not everyone starts out coachable, but here are some tips on how to be more coachable than you are:

  • ·         The first tip is to try. You don’t know that you’re uncoachable until you have tried it out first.
  • ·         Next is to continue to ask questions. This shows engagement and proves to your mentor that you really want to be there and are interested in learning more.
  • ·         Avoid assuming. Never assume, if you are not sure about something, ask for assistance because you can put yourself in a tough situation if something is done wrong. Make sure to perform your exact direction and be careful.
  • ·         Be prepared for change. Everything is constantly changing, it is important that you are prepared and ready for anything that comes your direction. Don’t be surprised.

These tips should help those who have trouble being coachable, but practice does make perfect. The more you practice the higher chance you have at being coachable. The more coachable you are, the greater your future will hold.
