Buying Kennel Pads for Your Dog’s “Bedroom”

The dog’s kennel is like his own room. Buying kennel pads is an important step to providing comfort and protection when he is in it.

Buying kennel pads for your dog’s kennel begins with a quick measure of the inside dimensions of the kennel. They have to fit in the kennel correctly or the door may not latch correctly and may become a safety hazard. But, at the same time, the pads should fit in the kennel fairly snugly or the dog may pull them up, get buried underneath them or destroy them in an effort to get out.

The material that you choose can be just as important as the size that you buy. Consider your dog’s comfort, especially if you have an older dog. Certain dogs have a preference for smoother or fuzzier materials, so that should be a consideration as well. The thickness should allow the dog to stand up without being too close to the top of the kennel. A reversible kennel pad is also a great choice because you can flip it over when the first side starts looking a little dingy and then wash it when both sides are soiled or messy. (If the pad is extremely soiled or the dog has been ill, it should be washed immediately.)

Another option to consider is a flat pad that has a removable cover that can be tossed into the washer and dryer. If you choose this type, it is entirely worth it to buy a second pad cover for when the first one is being washed. Rotating the two may also extend their life span as well.

Consider temperatures when you choose your pads. Certain types of pad are meant to hold the heat, which is great during the cooler months, especially for an older dog, while others can help keep your kenneled dog cooler. Remember: if you are feeling a little too warm, your poor dog is probably roasting. A good kennel pad can help to keep him cool, which is vital, especially if he has to be in there for several hours during the day.

There are some extras in the pads that you might consider as well. These can include scents that are meant to repel fleas from your dog as well as scents that may relax him while he is in the kennel. This can be important especially if the dog goes to his kennel when he is feeling stressed out or overwhelmed.

Always keep track of the condition of your dog’s pad- some dogs find the fiber filling inside of their pads utterly delicious and can make themselves very sick by eating it. Once a pad has gotten tears or rips, it is time to retire itFree Articles, so make sure that you have new kennel pads ready to go when you finally toss the old one away.
