How to Choose Hamster Names

Congratulations on your new hamster! Hamsters are arguably the cutest creatures in the rodent family and they make wonderful pets.  As you search for names for your new hamster, remember to look for ones that that you like and that also suit the appearance and personality of your new furry friend.  To help guide you, here’s a list of some of the directions you can take:

1) You can search for hamster names based on the color of your hamster’s fur.  For example, you might want to name him Snowflake if he’s white, Hershey if he’s brown or Pumpkin if he’s orange.

2) You can search for hamster names based on your hamster’s markings. If, for example, you have a white hamster with black spots, Domino or Panda just might be the perfect name.

3) You can look for names like Gadget, Gizmo, Tic Tac, and Jellybean, which refer to your hamster’s small size.

4) You can think of humorous hamster names like Hamlet and Hambone (both of which are inspired by the word “hamster”) or Bear, Moose or Hulk -  the opposite of what hamsters are, size-wise!

5) You can search for cute names like Muffin, Doodle, Boo Boo and Ziggy because “cute” is what hamsters are!

6) You can search for names that describe your hamster’s personality – but make sure you observe your hamster for a few days so that you have an accurate idea of what he or she is like.

7) You can use your hobbies for inspiration.  If you love movies, why not choose a name out of your favorite film?   A hamster might make a very cute Yoda!  Enjoy sport?  Pick a sports term like Putter or Puck.

8) You can think of famous people who you admire or whose names you like.  They could be presidents, royalty, movie stars, scientists, inventors…the list goes on.  Napoleon, Einstein and Angelina would all make great hamster names!

9) You can look beyond your own language.  For example, if you’d like a hamster name that’s a touch exotic and different, why not choose a Native American hamster name like Yoki (rain) or a Japanese hamster name like Kabuki (Japanese dance-drama)?

10) You can find pet naming books or search through pet naming websites.  You’ll find hundreds, if not thousands, of great hamster names to choose from.

If you use these suggestions along with your creativity and imagination, you’re sure to come up with a great list of hamster names. If you have trouble narrowing it down to one, ask a friend or family member for their opinion, or – better yet – try calling them out to your hamster.  Its response just might help you pick the perfect one!

One parting tip: if you’re planning to choose a gender specific name, make sure you know whether you hamster is male or female (the place where you bought your hamster or your vet should be able to help you if you can’t tell).  This way, you won’t one day realize that your “Jack” is in fact a “Jill”!
