If you are going out of town for a few days, your pet certainly will not be able to care for itself if left alone.  If you do not want to trouble your friends, family members, or neighbors, then you will need to leave your pet in a boarding facility.

Since your pet is a member of your family, you do not just want to leave him anywhere.  There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a boarding facility for your pet.  Here are a few tips.

First of all, you want to choose a boarding facility that follows standards set by the state.  The facility should have a certificate or license displaying this fact.  You can also check to see if the facility is a member of the American Boarding Kennels Association.

This association also sets standard for boarding facilities to adhere too.  More importantly, they also inspect the buildings of their members for safety and quality.  Your background check on the potential boarding place should also include a check with the Better Business Bureau to see if other pet owners have had any problems.

It is important for you to not just make a phone call to choose a boarding facility for your pet.  You should take a tour of the place yourself.  You will want to know if it looks and smells clean.  There should also be plenty of lighting and ventilation.

It is also a good idea to meet the staff that works there.  It is important for the staff to be knowledgeable about dealing with pets.  They should also act like they care so you will not be worried about your pet being mistreated.

Having your pet around other animals presents a health risk.  That is why it is important for your pet to be kept up-to-date on all of his vaccinations.  The facility should require this of every pet that stays there.  When kept in a kennel, one of the most important vaccinations for your dog to have is for bordetella, more commonly known as canine kennel cough.

It is also a good idea to see where other animals are kept in the facility.  You do not want your dog kept in an area with cats in sight.  You will also want to see what type of floor it has.  Concrete floors will eventually hurt your pet's paws, so there should be boards and bedding to help prevent this.

It's also a good idea to learn how often the facility will feed your pet.  You do not want him to go hungry.  If your pet eats only a special type of food, you will want the ability to leave it there for the staff to feed to him.  Also, some animals require medications, so the facility should be willing to provide it to your pet.

It is very important for you to choose an appropriate boarding facility for your pet.  You do not just want to leave himComputer Technology Articles, so make sure the place is clean and has plenty of ventilation.  All other animals staying there should also be required to be current on their vaccinations.
