Unfortunately, when it came to learning how to train a pitbull, my wife laura and I had to learn the hard way. We waited until "Rocco", our Pitbull, was almost an adult to begin the training process. We finally found a professional Pitbull handler who gave us the keys to training Pitbulls.

Learning how to train a Pitbull is essential for any Pitbull owner who wants a dog who wants a sociable, well adjusted, companion. Pitbulls are, by nature, faithful and loving pets. However, because of their size, strength and reputation, certain steps must be taken in the training process to ensure success.

1) Start The Training Process As Early As Possible

We made the mistake of waiting until our Pitbull was almost an adult to begin learning how to train a Pitbull.

BAD mistake! At that point, "Rocco" was almost 70 lbs, and had developed many undesirable habits and behaviors. He was very difficult to control, strong willed, and nasty to other dogs. We soon discovered that the old adage, "you can't teach old dogs new tricks", was indeed the truth. We eventually did train "Rocco", but only after we received professional guidance from an expert. It is possible to begin training with one word commands as early as 9-10 weeks. More advanced training has to wait until 5-6 months. Before that time, the chances are that your Pitbull will not have an appropriate attention span.

2) Obtain Your Pitbull From A Reputable Breeder

To obtain a Pitbull from any source that cannot be researched can be a risky proposition. When we were learning how to train a Pitbull, we discovered that a Pitbull with the proper temperment makes the job MUCH easier. With a reputable breeder, it is often times possible to meet your puppy's litter mates and at least one of the parents. You can then observe the temperments of Pitbulls in your puppy's bloodline. While temperments do vary, it will at least give you an idea of what you may possibly expect from your puppy,

3. Begin Socialization At An Early Age

Introduce your Pitbull puppy to as many social situations as possible at an early age. Pitbulls are great with humans, not so friendly to other dogs. For this reason, taking your puppy to places where other dogs congregate can be helpful. Dog parks, for example, can be excellent places for your Pitbull puppy to get used to other dogs. Socialization is part of how to train a Pitbull.
