Travel Tips For Shih Tzus

It is not unusual for Shih Tzu owners to take their Shih Tzus with them during travels. Apart from being great household companions, many shih tzus have become their owner's favorite travel companions because of their size and temperament - alert, happy, affectionate and friendly little dogs. However, owners must remember that extra care should be given to shih tzus when traveling because they are sensitive to temperatures being brachycephalic dogs.

Before you decide whether or not you will take your pet with you, schedule a visit with your veterinarian to assess his condition and his ability to travel. Know that pets that are very young or old, sick, pregnant or recovering from surgery are not fit to travel. It would be better if they are left under the care of a pet sitter or clean kennel rather than risk their health or even their lives while on travel. Inform your vet where you will be traveling, for how long and what mode of transportation you are going to use. Ask your vet about flea, heartworm or tick risks and make sure vaccinations are up to date. Bring a copy of your dog's medical records including rabies certificate. When traveling by air, be sure that records and certificates are not more than ten days before the departure.

Your pet should wear a well-fitted collar with tags at all times while traveling. The tags must show accurate information such as your name, address and contact number in case you and your pet becomes separated. You also need to prepare temporary tag with the address and contact number of your destination.

Don't forget to bring your dog's stuff such as:

- Food. If you are not sure that your brand of dog food will be available at your destination or along the way, bring enough for the whole trip. If what you brought is not enough to last for the whole trip and if you are unable to get your pet's normal brand, switch over to the new food but remember to do it gradually because sudden changes of diet can cause stomach upset.

- Water. To avoid bacterial contamination while traveling, bring drinking water from home.

- Portable food and water bowl or water bottle

- Leash

- Extra collar

- Familiar things at home such as toys, chews, and even your pet's beddings.

- Poop bags, carpet cleaner, disinfectant spray and trash bags.

- Towels, old blanket or sheets to cover the seat of the car or bedding and furniture at your destination.

- First aid kit
