In the quest for understanding the essence of human suffering, spiritual ignorance emerges as the primary culprit. This lack of divine wisdom, or Avidya, is akin to darkness that envelops the soul, obscuring the path to eternal bliss and peace. Conversely, the illumination of divine wisdom dispels this ignorance, leading to liberation from pain and sorrow. The Spiritual Law of Salvation

According to the revered sage Maharshi Vasishtha,Unveiling the Root of Sorrow and Strife Articles as he enlightened Lord Rama, the root of all sorrow is spiritual ignorance (Ajnana or Maya). This ignorance is not insurmountable; it can be dispelled through the attainment of divine wisdom, particularly through the practice of Jnana Yoga. The scripture Yoga Vasishtha states:

“AAYADHO VYAADHAYASHCHAIVA
 DWAYA DUKHASYA KAARANAM.
 TANNIVRITIHI SUKHAM VIDYAAT
 TATKSHAYO MOKSHA UCHYATAY.”

Translated, this means: "The material world subjects us to two types of sorrows: bodily and mental. These can be overcome through wisdom-based austerities. Moksha, or salvation, is the complete eradication of material sorrow."

Salvation, therefore, is synonymous with the destruction of all sorrows, leading to eternal spiritual bliss. It is a state of ceaseless, balanced, and uniform joy that is self-manifesting and independent of external factors. True salvation, or Moksha, is characterized by the absence of desire and the presence of infinite, self-fulfilling bliss.

The Illusion of Material Pleasures

Material pleasures, such as entertainment and indulgences, are fleeting and ultimately lead to more sorrow and strife. They are dependent on external causes and diminish over time, often resulting in aversion. The pursuit of these pleasures can never lead to true contentment or satiation, as they are inherently transient and illusory.

The Yoga Vasishtha further explains that true bliss is experienced at the soul level, without the influence of external causes. It is the bliss of salvation that is true and eternal. Humanity often wastes its lifespan chasing material pleasures, mistaking them for the ultimate goal, when in reality, they are akin to a mirage in the desert.

The Path to Eternal Bliss

The Indian scripture YOGAVASISHTHA provides guidance on attaining eternal bliss:

“JNAANAANNIRDUKHATAAMAYTEE
 JNAANAADANAANA SANKSHAYA.
 JNAANAADEVA PARAASIDHIR
 NAANYASYAADRAAM VASTUTAHA.”

This translates to: "O Rama! Only divine wisdom can ward off all sorrow. Divine wisdom destroys spiritual ignorance and leads us to our ultimate goal in life. There is no other way."

A realized saint, armed with sacred hindsight (Viveka), is never overcome by sorrow, much like a rain-soaked forest is impervious to fire.

The True Nature of Divine Wisdom

Divine wisdom, or Tattva-Jnana, is the antidote to the sorrow and strife caused by spiritual ignorance. It is not merely information about the material world but a profound understanding of the self, God, and the nature of existence. True knowledge enables one to discern between wholesome and unwholesome actions and to follow the path of Truth.

Spiritual ignorance is the root cause of unwholesome actions, which result in the joys and sorrows of the world. Even righteous actions performed with a sense of doer-ship can lead to transient joy that eventually turns to sorrow. Thus, it is through action (Karma) that mankind experiences bondage and suffering.

Conclusion: The Pursuit of Divine Wisdom

The pursuit of divine wisdom is the righteous duty of all mankind, as it is the only path that leads to the destruction of spiritual ignorance and the manifestation of divine wisdom in the soul. True knowledge is not limited to academic education but encompasses a deep understanding of life, death, bondage, liberation, action, inaction, and truth. It is through this understanding that one can achieve true salvation and eternal bliss.

In summary, the root of sorrow and strife is spiritual ignorance, which can only be overcome by the light of divine wisdom. This wisdom leads to the ultimate goal of life—salvation and eternal bliss. It is imperative for humanity to seek this knowledge and to distinguish between the illusory pleasures of the material world and the true, everlasting joy of the soul.
