Types of Literary Translators - which one would you prefer?

Literary translation has its own set of issues, which are quite distinct from those of, say legal translation or technical translation. One is the type of translator to use for this type of translation.

One particular are of translation, literary translation is just of one of the four main fields in the translation industry. The others are legal translation, scientific and technical translation, and commercial or business translation. Literary translation does not cover only famous literature. However, it is referring as well to the wide scope of the literary arts or writings such as poems, short stories, collections of jokes, travel guide, documentary scripts and opera libretti or plays.

Some translators just developed their ability skills in learning other languages by living long periods in other countries. Although there are some translators that are capable in this profession without holding any formal qualifications, a translator having a degree in learning modern languages and holding some certificates of being a linguist and an effective translator is far, far more advantageous and trustworthy .

Classical literature is very rich and full of aspiring knowledge that can be helpful to nurture the essence of foreign culture. However, most of the classical literary arts is in classical languages, so in order for them to be accessible to everybody, literary translation is necessary.

In the translation world, there are two types of translators, one is the Traditionalist and the other is the Builder. The Traditionalists commonly practice interpreting the vocabulary, with the sentiment wise and easy, although it may create boredom to the readers at some point. On the other side of the spectrum is the Builder, who is more after the common interpretation and more concerned about the acceptance and understanding of the reading materials to the readers. However, Builder translators often twist things around, or introduce some emotions to spice up the story a bit by changing the word flow, but the entire plot of the story is still the same as the original.

There are some instances where you may find a classic novel that has been translated by the same language and yet, by different translators. In addition, if you try to read the first paragraph of the novel, you may find that the two translators have different ways and views in translating such a novel. So what is the difference then? Can both of the translators done well in the translation of such a work of art?

Literary audiences and readers are the most efficient tool in judging literary translation. Some people would prefer reading a translated literary work that is direct, to the point and commonly laid in the opinion of the readers, and then he or she would favour the Traditionalist type. However, if the audience or reader is more after flowery words and a more modern flow of the story, then the reader is favouring the Builder type.

Literary translation may be different among the others but it still needs both of accuracy and quality of work. Thus, the meaning of the translated text must be the same as the original source. However, just like the two types of literary translators, there may be different types of literary readers or audience as well. In addition, in cases like these, people should determine to choose their work taste or preference of style of literary translation.

To sum up, literary translation is indeed important, it does not only give us amusement but it gratifies our needs as well, like understanding other cultures. Thus, quality literary translation should be a rule!
