Bloodstone, though also known as heliotrope, has derived its original and popular name from its physical appearance. Basically found in green and shades of green color, it has tiny multicolored (basically red and brown) spots over its surface which holds high resemblance with blood spots.
One such significant legend states that it originated out of the blood drops which solidified after falling on the green earth from the body of Jesus Christ when he was crucified to death. It is because of this belief that this stone gained tremendous popularity and enormous contemplation of people during the period of Middle Ages. To mark that significance, people also prominently used it in sculptures of martyrdom, out of which it derived another name of ‘Martyr’s stone’.
The other name of ‘heliotrope’ has been originated from the roots of Greek terminology, where it refers for sun and turning. This is so because it holds a striking resemblance with a red setting sun as reflected down in an ocean.
