The ways of studying man

Anthropology is usually divided into three parts. The first part is the study of geography in relation to man. It is the study of how man lives in different parts of the world and in different climates. The second part of anthropology is the study of the races of mankind. This kind of anthropology compares the races to find differences and similarities between the different races of mankind. In this study the anthropologist is interested mostly in what men look like—the color of their skins, their height and weight and body structure, and the shapes of their heads, noses, and jaws. The third part of anthropology is the study of man's culture. This means how man uses his intelligence, and what his activities are. In this study, the anthropologist learns how man has built his home, what kind of clothing he wears, what tools he uses, and what arts and crafts he works at.

This third part of anthropology also studies man's social life, his language, religion, marriage customs, and family life. It includes the study of how man governs himself. One of the branches of anthropology is archalology , about which there is a separate article. Archaeologists have studied the history of man's activities through thousands of years. They have learned much about the development of man from his early (cave-living) days to what we are at present. Anthropologists study prehistoric man, ancient man, the modern savage, and civilized man.

Anthropologists journey to all parts of the world to study man. They stay in small villages in India and China. They live with the Eskimos in Alaska, and with the jungle tribes in Africa. They study the people at work and at play. They learn something about the language, and listen to the stories the people tell. They listen to the songs and watch the dances and festivals.
