You should not try to get links from just any website, even if it has a lot of authority.  Backlinks from relevant sites in your niche are more useful.  For example; you would not want to get a lot of backlinks from gambling and gardening sites if your website is about horses.

It is also important for you to take into account the attributes of the backlink itself.  Links can have a nofollow or dofollow attribute.  Nofollow links do not pass much value to your website, if any at all.  Therefore, it is best for you to focus on getting dofollow links.
