Sexual activity is enjoyable for both males and females but it sometimes causes consequences which are not desired such as unwanted pregnancy. Condoms are one of the important and most popular methods of contraception which is used in the recent time. Though there are both male and female condoms but use of the male condoms is popular because of easy availability and inexpensiveness. Condoms are not only the best way for birth control but they are good for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. The type of the condoms to be used depends on the partners participating in the sexual activity and how comfortable they are using the measure.

Condoms are made of latex and such condoms are very reliable to use. In case one needs to use lubricants, only water based lubricants are to be used. For the condoms which are made of latex, no oil based lubricants like creams or Vaseline should be used as it could cause the condoms to get slipped from the position. Some condoms are made of polyurethanes which are a type of plastic and those who are allergic to the latex can use such condoms. With the condoms made of polyurethanes, both oil-based and water-based lubricants could be used. Some important facts about the female condoms and male condoms are-
  • While opening the male condoms, little caution has to be taken so that the condom is not torn. Never use any pointed thing or finger nails to open the wrapper.
  • After doing sex the condom should be discarded
  • It is advisable not to use the condoms which are too old or are not stored properly
  • Never use condoms whose expiry dates are over
  • Try to use the condoms of proper size otherwise these could break
Male condoms are found to be 85% effective and can be obtained from any drug store.

The female condoms are found to be 75% effective. These are made of polyurethane tube which has flexible ring at each end. One end of the tube is closed. The female condom has to be inserted into the vagina before starting the sexual activity. After the sexual activity, these condoms are to be discarded too.
