One can clearly appreciate all of the technological advances in today’s modern world. Efficiency in the work place, improved health-care, and increased leisure time are only the tip of the ice-berg in this brave new world.

However; there are some drawbacks.Somehow during the never-ending search for ‘newer,Use It Or Lose It! Articles bigger, better’, we have lost sight of our most valuable asset. (NO, it’s not a big screen T.V.)

It’s Our Minds!

I find it very disconcerting that there are high school graduates that can’t read or write. I find it truly terrifying that they can’t add without a calculator. Have you ever been a customer at a store or a restaurant and witnessed some poor cashier struggling to arrive at the correct total and change? Yet this same person can surf the net and download songs and movies faster than the speed of light. We are spawning an entire generation of techno-junkies that has only the most rudimentary survival skills.

When my son was in elementary school he was given a list of words to learn for a spelling test. There was only one problem; one of the words was spelled incorrectly ON THE LIST. There is obviously something wrong with a system that generates illiterate ‘teachers’.

When he reached high school it became mandatory that he use a calculator. Thankfully, he had already acquired a facility with numbers, but many of his schoolmates weren’t as fortunate. What will happen when they don’t have access to a calculator?

When all the machines are gone, the only thing left will be the knowledge inside your mind. If the mind isn’t being nurtured it will wither and die.

Read a book, play cards, do a puzzle, but do something, anything it takes to preserve the most valuable asset you have.
