Gloves, I started running in the first winter, I purchased a pair of gloves that used for ski, thought it may create a barrier between my hand and the cold air. But I am wrong, after several minutes running, my hands are full of sweat because the wet can not dry at all. I need breathable gloves. Wool gloves and mittens are good, but I prefer white cotton gloves that used for gardening. To buy such a pair of gloves is less than a dollar. If gloves get dirty, put them together with other clothes into the washing machine. Running clothes need to be washed frequently and thoroughly. Nothing can be worse to make skin fold and dirty than sweat clothes. Some people think old mittens or gloves are warmer than new ones, but I do not see any difference between them.
Hats, when the energy lost, 40 percent of them are from head. Therefore, it is important to wear hat. Summer, some runners wearing the kind of painter's hat to protect head. If you are bald or have rare hair, wear hats will be a good idea. But in the condition that your air is thick, you would wear nothing. After all, you want to make the heat dissipated from the head as easy as possible, then there would be no cap benefits. The only special case it in the race game, they can get a lot of ice, like 1976 people in the heat.
In the cool spring, wear common hats keep from sunlight, but to winter running, this is not like that. They help to keep your body heat. So hats are necessary, especially if you're long-distance run.
Masks, I once met a runner; he insisted that we should all wear a special mask, he believe that it will filter dust in air. He wears mask ever time, he likes to refer to people how dirty his mask becomes. He believed the dust is filter by mask, or they will go to our lung. But we do not why, this method is not populated at all. But if you are in a particularly serious polluted area, or you are particular about the health of the person, you can consider wearing a mask.
When the weather is cold occasionally see someone wearing a ski mask. There are two reasons for doing that, one of them is reasonable. Ski mask can prevent from frostbite on your face. Though it is not so cold to cause frostbite, it makes you comfortable. The function ski masks can not achieve is to make air would be taken into lung warm. Some runners do not go for running when it is freezing cold.  I had ran for a decade and never heard of anyone get respiratory system problem running under cold weather. I had seen some excellent players, at the speed of 12 miles each hour at below the freezing temperatures. They certainly will need deep breath.
