In 1924, NHL expanded to six teams, joined the first United States team and named Boston Bruins. Montreal developed its second team, Pirates. Before long NHL grew up in Chicago, Detroit, New York and Pittsburgh, then joined more and more American teams. It can be said that the 1920s witnessed the mature period of NHL as a Hockey League. Now, the Stanley Cup is exclusive properties of the League, its owners are the teams who win in the competition. But, the difficult period of the Great Depression after the prosperous twenty years. The talented players of these six teams combated to each other for some decades. Hockey was considered to be the best during the period of 1950s to 1960s. Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadians teams won eleven tournament titles from1955 to 1967 in twelve competitions. In the season of 1967-1968, the team developed into twelve, opened a new era for NHL. It also encouraged and gave the low level players chances to play in NHL. World Hockey Association was established in 1972, many future stars came from it, such as Bobby Hull, Gordy Howe, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. In 1979, the league almost died in the financial crisis, but the new team joined and did not make the tragedy staged. NHL Dynasty was witnessed from 1970s to 1980s. Montreal Canadians of 1970s, New York Island at the end of the 1910s to 1980s and the Edmund Oil Production team attracted a large number of fans around the world.NHL became the world's top hockey league in the 1990s. As more teams joined in, NHL became a place where the international players were all eager for a try. The league had some labor disputes in 1990 s and the new century. The rapid increase in wages, the instability of the investors and smaller teams' financial difficulties put the league into two crisis. From the late 1990s to the new millennium, NHL has thirty teams; players' salary has reached a high record. However; it was not satisfied by everybody. Fans started to leave the competition area, because they did not willing to see the blending competition, which resulted in the bankruptcy to some bosses. After the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup after the 2003 to 2004 season, NHL experienced the darkest period of its history.
