Some comments about finding the time.

Jerry Noah (this was not his real name, you would understand the reason later.) was an important manager of an advertising company in Manhattan. He had a flat in this city, a summer place on the Long Island, two cars, a dog and his children studied in the famous university. The advertising managers, especially some significant managers, worked very hard. But as far as the outsiders could see, sometimes they seemed to do nothing all day, because the outsiders did not understand what they were doing. The outsiders primarily noticed that it took them three hours to have lunch. What the outsiders did not understand was that much of their work was done at lunch. So to have lunch with three hours was not a luxury or indulgence behavior and there was no the famous advertising all around the world. Therefore Jerry Noah left his office which was at the corner at noon every working day and he did not came back until three o'clock, he never caused special attention. He had done this for some years and he would still do this from now on - that is to say if he was still lucky. In fact, Jerry Noah did not go to lunch and did not have lunch with the client or other person. On the contrary, he took a taxi to the corner of No. 63 Street and Central Park West Street, walked into West End YMCA, changed into the sportswear. In a short while, a documentary film producer, a securities analyst, a magazine editor and a man who worked in a large accounting firm also came. Their situation was much the same with Jerry Noah's. Their bosses believed they were having lunch with the person who was helpful to their business.

These were the secrets of the runners, the number of the runners was great. Once you had learned what you should notice, it was easy to recognize these runners. He (or she, because many people were women) exposed to the weather and his face became black and red. Around noon the meeting looked like to exceed the prescribed time and continue, he would become restless, even twitch. He was always packing a convenient bag which was water-repellent. The most important thing was that when someone asked him the activities at lunch, he would seem to have amnesia. (In most offices of the United States, a man came back after lunch, because he had drunk martini and was in a daze state, he even did not find his desk, this was quite all right, but if he exercised with sportswear for an hour, it would be considered indecent.) For runners, running was in the first place. On the surface, he and she might be the same to other people, but they had important difference. In the society which did not understand the true meaning of running, it seemed that secret runners were living for running. He was on the leading edge. This would cause some problems; some of them had deviant colors. For instance, the secret runners had to hide his whereabouts, or in order that he had a legitimate activity at lunch, he even modified his dispatch list secretly.
