So you have decided you want to learn how to ride a unicycle. The good news is it is probably easier than you think. Like any kind of sport or activity the key to becoming a good unicycle rider is practice. Here are a few things you need to know to get you started.

The first thing you need to do is choose a unicycle that is the right size for you. The 20 inch unicycle is the most popular model and most likely the one you need to get practicing. However if you are over 6 feet tall you should probably consider getting either a 24 or 26 inch wheel. For kids it is best to start them on a 16 or 18 inch wheel unicycle.

Once you have your unicycle it is time to give it a go. The first time you are learning you should find an area that has a long hand rail that you can use to balance yourself. Ride down the handrail with one hand balancing you.

When you get to the end do not turn the unicycle around just start peddling backwards. This is a good way to work on both your forward and backward skills all at once. As you start to feel more comfortable you can stop using the handrail.

Once you have the forward and backward down pat you need to start learning how to turn the unicycle. Since a unicycle does not have handlebars you have to turn the unicycle with your weight. So if you want to go right you push down a little harder on the right peddle while slightly leaning to the right. This part takes a little practice but once you get it down it becomes second nature.

One of the most important things when learning how to ride a unicycle is to not get frustrated or discouraged. It does take practice but if you stay on task and keep doing it you will be riding like a pro in no time. So if you have some setbacks or skills that are hard to master keep moving forward.

Once you have mastered unicycle riding there are a lot of different facets you can get into including unicycle off-roading which is called Mountain Unicycle or maybe you even want to get one of the giant unicycles that has you 6 feet in the air. Last but not least you could always take your new found unicycle skills and run away with the circus!
