Shopping online for bike racks for cars means that you have to read about each one and sift through the mass of information available. A blessing or a curse? This article will give you a brief breakdown on the types of basics bike racks for cars. It will take you one step closer to getting what you want.

1. Hitch Mount Bike Rack

The hitch mount is a very secure option. People who worry about a bike rack scratching their car should go for this option. I know that racks usually come with padding but there is always some marking left from the racks after a while.  If you have a hitch receiver then it's probably the best option for you. Some models are better if you want to get in and out of the trunk of your vehicle because they have a swing away option.

2. Trunk Mount Bike Rack

Great option if you don't have a hitch receiver. A problem here is that its more common for bikes to get stolen when using this type of bike rack. Some models have overcome this issue so if safety is a concern then make sure that you get it. Separate locks are available from dealers as well.

Con with this model is that you cannot get into the trunk of your car if they rack is attached.

3. Truck Mount Bike Rack

Just like it says. You can get a bike rack that fits in the back of a pickup. Bikes are secure and safe behind the drivers cockpit. Really a good option if you have got a truck.

4. Spare Tire Mount Carriers

For people with SUVs and no hitch receivers then a bicycle carrier can fit easily onto the spare wheel behind the car. Once again be careful which model you are choosing because spares on cars are not all fitted in the same place. Some spare tire bike racks are adjustable. Look out for them.

6. Bike Roof Rack

This type of bike rack is great if you are needing to get in an out of the back of your car, but on the down side, there is a lot of wind resistance felt when driving. You might find you pay for more gas because your vehicle is having to do more work. Also if you are short or if your car is BIG, then getting the bikes on and off the rack might be a bit of a mission. Think practical.
