Understanding Volleyball Game Terminology For Beginners


The love for volleyball game for many people is never ending. Many youngsters love to play all sorts of different team sports. Among all the games, volleyball seems to be the best game for many youngsters.

Volleyball can be played indoor as well as outdoor according to its own convenient and weather. But many prefer to play outside as it is more spacious and lively. When you play volleyball in the open air, the game can be more lively and exciting due to cheering from the crowds.

Beach volleyball is considered to be the best game to be played for both players and spectators. If you are watching the game on a beach, you will get a tan on your skin. As for the players, the playing court can be easily set up. All you need is a ball, a net and lines drawn on the sand to dictate the play area.

There are many reasons why people like beach volleyball. For the players, the soft sand allows them to move freely and minimize injuries. A player can also dive to prevent a ball from scoring and land on the sand without having bumps and scratches on his body.

For newbie, playing volleyball for the first time can be quite challenging. Some of the challenges that new players will face are to understanding the different terminologies of the game. For instance, a total beginner may not know terms such as dig, spike, setting, volley, block, sweep etc.

When you are learning how to play volleyball, two of the key terms you must understand are “dig” and “spike”. The term dig simply means to shovel the ball upwards when the ball is low. The term spike means hitting the ball downward into the opponent area to score a point.
