Cell Phone Terms

GSM – Refers to the Global System for Mobile Communications and it is the most popular standard for cellular phones in the world. 

Band – Refers to the frequency the cellular phone receives. There are four frequencies used throughout the globe. Some phones can pick up more than one single. This is evidenced by phones on the market such as dual band (2), tri band (3) and quad band (all 4).

Capacitive Touch Screen – A touch control screen found on the face of the phones. If not proper cleaned and cared for, it can cease to respond to the operator’s touch.

Dual SIM – This is a phone that holds two SIM cards inside it. These phones can connect you with TWO providers at the same time. Obviously, with two SIM cards the phone can store double the info such as two separate phone numbers UNLESS it is corrupted in some way and the SIM cards are rendered useless.

Dual Standby – This allows the cell phone to maintain two SIM cards and, hence, two separate service provider phone numbers.

OS – OS stands for operating system and it is the brains and central nervous system of a cell phone. Crashes and corruptions are problems that may occur to and operating system if the phone is not properly cared for.

GUI – Component of a cell phone that allows for command interface from the operational components of the phone to its internal OS and hard drive. The worst thing that can go wrong with GUI is that it won’t work properly or at all.

Nucleus OS – A cell phone operating system designed to perform real time applications. Produced by the Mentor Graphics company and used in various cell phones and their accessories.

Simbian OS – A cell phone operating system developed by Nokia and can work with associated libraries, interfaces, etc.

Java App – This is an application that will need to be installed on the phone in order to run certain software. Improper installation could lead to problems with running the software or, worse, can cause problems with the OS of the phone.

2/3 G network and 2/3G phones – 2g phones/networks may be digital but 3G phones/networks expand on 2G technologies. 3G provides the fastest transmissions and most expansive accessories. 3G also works with both GSM and CDMA networks.

Bluetooth – Open wireless technology that can connect and exchange between short distances. Phones that are Bluetooth compatible will be desirable in the marketplace.

Bluetooth Profile – Wireless interfaces that define applications so that various

Bluetooth profiles can communicate with one another.

There are scores of profiles that can be employed including Basic Imaging Profile, Audio/Video Remote Control Profile, Device ID Profile, Hands-Free Profile, etc.

WAP – WAP stands for wireless access protocol and refers to a cell phone connecting to the internet. Phones that can deliver internet service will be very popular with consumers.

MMS – MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service and allows cell phones to send audio, video, photos and other multimedia through text messages. Phones with this capability are attractive with consumers that send such files.

Flashing the Firmware – This is a process that involves breaking the security codes on a cell phone so as to download and add apps. BEWARE – Doing this when not technically adept can lead to ruining the phone.

Memorizing all these terms cannot be done overnight. However, if you review this list, you will discover your knowledge base increases relatively quickly.
