Embarking on a luxurious journey with Indochina Sails, a subsidiary of Huong Hai Junks, offers an unforgettable experience cruising through the emerald waters of Halong Bay, Vietnam. This travelogue recounts a day filled with adventure, cultural insights, and serene moments amidst the bay's legendary beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hospitable staff of Indochina Sails and offered refreshing cold towels—a sign of the luxury that awaited us. After a brief wait, our luggage was whisked away to the ship, and we were escorted via a tender to our vessel, accompanied by the rhythmic beat of a drum that added a cinematic touch to our approach.
The ship's interior mirrored the opulence of a four-star hotel, particularly our second-level room which boasted a panoramic view of Halong Bay and an impressive shower facility. After settling in, we reconvened in the dining room for a delectable set lunch featuring a variety of dishes, including cream of pumpkin soup, papaya salad, and succulent prawns.
Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the bay's stunning landscapes and local culture. We visited the Cua Van fishing village, home to 400 floating houses, where the government provides basic education and healthcare. The sight of young children expertly navigating their own boats was particularly striking.
The legend of Halong Bay, involving dragons sent by the gods to protect the coast, adds a mystical allure to the islands' lush greenery. This narrative, coupled with the bay's natural beauty, underscores its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Seeking adventure, we opted for kayaking, a new experience for some of us. Paddling through the currents to explore hidden caves and tranquil waters was both challenging and rewarding. The serene environment allowed us to fully absorb the bay's magnificence.
After kayaking, we enjoyed a leisurely swim in the warm waters near Ti Tov beach, forgoing the climb to the island's summit in favor of relaxation and conversation with fellow travelers.
Dinner aboard the ship was a set menu affair, featuring a variety of dishes, including a shrimp and grapefruit salad and a main course of calamari and beef. While the beef may not have lived up to the standards of Alberta beef, the meal was rounded off with a delightful chocolate cake for dessert.
Post-dinner activities included squid fishing, where we tried our luck under the guidance of the crew. The peaceful night was further enhanced by a 2-for-1 happy hour, allowing us to enjoy drinks while taking in the tranquil surroundings from the top deck.
Our evening concluded with the knowledge that we were anchored at an exclusive spot away from the bustling crowd of tour boats. The seclusion provided a perfect backdrop for stargazing and reflection on the day's experiences before retiring to the comfort of our beds, ready for the next day's early start.
