A Visit to Alabama

From beaches to mountains, Alabama has it all, and aside from natural beauty, the state contains many destinations of interest and fun the whole family.

Located in the southeastern United States, the state of Alabama offers a unique destination to the traveler, with many surprises in store and a good ol’ heapin’ helping of Southern hospitality. From beaches to mountains, Alabama has it all, and aside from natural beauty, the state contains many destinations of interest and fun the whole family.

Many first-time visitors are surprised to find that Alabama has some of the most beautiful beaches in the United States, with crystal-clear waters and sands so blindingly white you’ll definitely want to wear sunglasses. The white sands were deposited there eons ago when glaciers ground off the tops of what are now known as the Appalachian mountains and deposited the fine quartz sand at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

Further inland, the visitor will find thick forests populated with pine and hardwoods with rivers interspersing them, and in the north of the state are the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian mountains. There are plenty of nature activities and camping available in Alabama in the national forests and private camping areas.

The various cities in Alabama are interesting places to visit and each has a flavor of their own - Mobile is a historic city located on Mobile Bay, and is a great place to soak up some southern culture and history and is also a great place to eat some fresh seafood. Oysters and fried seafood are the specialties and are definitely not to be missed. In other cities in Alabama you will find southern traditional cooking and delicious BBQ.

Birmingham, the largest city in the state, is a hilly, green place with a turbulent history but the city has managed to heal the wounds of the past and is now a peaceful, friendly community with a lot to offer. There are some lovely Birmingham hotels and bed & breakfasts and there are a lot of nearby attractions for the family, including the Alabama Adventure Theme Park and the Birmingham Zoo. One alternative to staying in a Birmingham hotel is the Roses and Lace Bed & BreakfastFeature Articles, which is an old Victorian-era home that has been converted into a guest facility.
