Advice on Tipping Hotel Housekeepers

Just because you have reserved discount hotel rooms or bought cheap vacation packages is no reason to assume that you need not be concerned about tipping your hotel housekeepers.

Travelers are often confused when it comes to tipping housekeepers:

 1) Should I tip every night?

2) If I tip at the end of my stay, is the housekeeper who gets the tip the same person who has been cleaning the room each day?

While most guests know to tip a bellman, in part because he is standing in front of them, many guests don’t leave tips for housekeepers they often never see or forget gratuities in the rush to leave the room.

About 30 percent of American hotel guests leave tips for hotel housekeepers, according to recent surveys.

Lizzie Post, an etiquette expert with the Emily Post Institute says that guests should tip a housekeeper since “This is a person who really does try to make your stay in your room nice every single day…”

Post recommends the following:

·       Tip every day to make certain your tip is received by the person who actually cleaned your room.

·       Leave a note in your room with the money stating it is for housekeeping.

·       Tip $1 to $2 per person, per night in most hotels.  In more expensive hotels tip between $3 to $5 per person per night.

·       In a motelFree Articles, a tip is usually not necessary for a single night stay.  $1 to $2 remains appropriate for multiday stays.
