Edmonton which is the provincial capital, is known as the ‘Oil Capital of Canada’ and is also home to the world largest mall. In keeping with the large theme in the province largest city the Edmonton Space and Science Center features the largest planetarium in the country.
Calgary is another of the Canadian large cities. It has grown up between the flat farmlands and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Pictures of this city almost always feature the city beloved Calgary Tower. It is a downtown landmark and symbol, but it is also appreciated for its revolving restaurant, observation deck and cocktail lounge. Also downtown is the country longest running noontime theater appropriately named the Lunchbox Theater.
Calgary is a city of head offices, a university and professional sport franchises. The Saddledome is where the National Hockey league Calgary Flames play. The most exciting games are the ones played against their rivals the Edmonton Oilers. Of course Calgary is the world famous for the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’. It is the Calgary Stampede. This annual event has been a popular one since its beginning in 1912. while there are a dizzying number of attractions and shows the rodeo remains the best loved.
The fifteenth Winter Olympics were hosted here in 1988. many of the facilities already existed while others were built especially for the games. A trip to the site reveals the unnerving height of the ski jumps and the steep bobsled and luge runs.
