Chile Vacation Destinations on the Central Coast

The two most visited Chile travel destinations, San Pedro de Atacama and Torres del Paine National Park are located in the north and south of this extensive country that stretches 2,700 miles (4,300) from top to bottom. Central Chile, however, is quickly earning a place among the must see places to visit in the country. Here, travelers can find cosmopolitan and bohemian cities, ski resorts, wineries, and popular surf spots. Central Chile offers a bit of something for every type of traveler.

Santiago is the main port of entry for international travelers. More than just a transit point, Santiago boasts attractions that draw any type of travelers. This vibrant and bustling city offers numerous fine restaurants and Santiago hotels rank among the best and most comfortable in South America. Santiago also has amazing museums included the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and the brilliantly conceived Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, dedicated to elucidating upon the history of Chile under the Pinochet government. Aside from cultural attractions, there is also much for the adventure traveler, including hiking in the Parque Metropolitano, which offers great views of Santiago and the nearby Andes from San Cristobal Hill.

About 2 hours from Santiago are the coastal cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. Valparaiso is notable for its unique topography with architecture adapted to steep hills and undulating valleys. A bohemian city, Valparaiso bears the marks of the many artisans and artists who have made this city their home away from bustling Santiago. Among these variously famous and infamous personages is Pablo Neruda, Nobel Prize winning poet who has one of his 3 homes perched on a hill overlooking the sea. For practitioners of sports, central Chile has much to offer during all seasons. In the summer, Pichilemu, located southwest of Santiago, boasts first-class surfing beaches that attract surfers from around the world. Beginners’ beaches include Las Terrazas and La Puntilla, while at Punta Los Lobos, the 19-foot (6-meter) waves challenge skilled surfers. North of Viña del Mar, Ritoque is a beautiful beach with awesome waves.

In the winter months, the many ski resorts in central Chile attract hundreds of skiers and snowboarders. Their close proximity to Santiago makes these resorts particularly attractive for travelers who wish to ski while still having access to the comforts of a big city.
