Another top ecotourism destination for Costa Rica travel is the Tortuguero Conservation Area located in the north of the country near Nicaragua. In particular, at the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge, travelers will find a system of water canals integrated with beach ecosystems and marine wildlife population. This region has one of the most diverse representations of flora in the country and the waterways are host to unique marine species such as river manatee, caimes, and Gaspar fish. On land, travelers also have a chance to see jaguars, pumas, monkeys, and sloths.

Also within this area is the renowned Tortuguero National Park, which has one of the most important moist tropical forests in the world, filled with rivers, canals, and lagoons through which travelers can navigate. Created to protect green turtles, this area has become the prime nesting grounds for this species of turtle. Travelers can observe turtles are they lay eggs, hatch, and take their first walk to the sea.

La Amistad is yet another conservation area, this one located on the Pacific coast. At Chirripo National Park, travelers will find the highest peak in the country, which rises to 12,532 feet above sea level. For lovers of geology, this area bears the remains of glacial activity several thousand years ago.
