Don't Forget Your Keys: The Key Component To Your Rental Agreement

There are quite a few things to keep in mind when you are renting a vehicle.  You have probably given a lot of thought to handling and parking your rental vehicle and even the insurance that you're going to use.  If you're getting ready to pick up a rental vehicle then there is an issue that you need to be aware of and that is the care that must be taken with your keys.

As you travel around on vacation the keys are actually the most important part of your rental.  In one instance a couple had gone out to dinner and when they returned to their room they noticed that their keys were missing.  Assuming that they may have accidentally left the keys in the car they went to see and found their vehicle was missing.

Upon discovering this they contacted the rental company thinking that they would be covered, only to find out that if they couldn’t produce the keys then they were liable for the total cost of the vehicle.  The car rental insurance that they purchased would only cover them for a stolen vehicle if they were still in possession of the keys.  By leaving the keys behind this then became their fault because the rental keys allowed someone to pinpoint exactly which vehicle the keys would start and thus it was their own fault that the automobile was stolen, making them liable, even accessories to the theft.

Most people do not understand how significant those keys actually are however hanging onto those keys and being very careful with the placement of them throughout your vacation must be of the utmost significance.  A rental car company won't cover your vehicle if you can not locate the keys and may in fact believe that you had something to do with the disappearance of the vehicle if you don’t have them in your possession.

While on vacation it can be hard to keep track of things very simply because you are out of your element, away from home, and going from new place to new place just to see the sights.  Misplacing your keys or accidentally leaving them on the table when you go out to eat is something that could happen however it's critical to keep in mind that losing those keys during your holiday could be a expensive mistake and if you're one of those people who loses things quite frequently then you might want to put your rental car key onto your regular key chain so that there is no identifying information on the key itself.  If you do so and leave your keys behind at least you know that no one will be able to pinpoint your vehicle and drive off in it without your knowledge.
