Transfers from Salzburg Airport to the city centre are convenient,Enjoying Some of Salzburg's Top Attractions Articles swift and make even a short visit here absolutely hassle free. However, once you’ve arrived and checked into your accommodation, what are the very best attractions to choose for your itinerary?

While the driver of your transfers from Salzburg airport can help you out with plenty of 'locals only' information and tips, we've got some of our own ideas to share.

The surrounding countryside

If you like dramatic landscape and spectacular backdrops you’ll love the area around the city. The mountains in the distance are breathtaking and that also means some opportunities nearby for great winter or summer mountain sports. There are some good skiing opportunities not that far away as well, if you tire of culture.

History

This was originally a Roman city and was incredibly important during the Middle Ages and well into the 19th century, as both a political and religious capital. In fact, it was only comparatively late that the capital was moved to Vienna so, as you might expect, the history and culture expressed in the architecture, museums and galleries is staggering.

Many parts of both the old and ‘new’ towns are very picturesque and you’ll be able to wander around the quaint streets and squares for hours, just taking in the atmosphere as opposed to looking at anything specific. At the time of writing, entry to many museums and exhibitions is somewhere in the range of 8-12euros, which isn’t bad in the scheme of things. You can get explorer tickets and various discounts, just as you can in most city centres these days. They can make a big difference if you’re a family on a budget. It's worthwhile asking the driver of your transfers from Salzburg Airport to give you some local insight into this.

Food and drink

It's true that Austrian cuisine isn’t exactly renowned around the world, and usually doesn’t feature in a top 10 list comprising countries such as France, Italy, Thailand and China etc. That’s a pity, because it can be delicious when well-prepared. The style of the food served around the city is often heavily carbohydrate based, so expect to see lots of polenta, pasta, potatoes, dumplings, sauces and freshwater fish. Traditionally, meat wasn’t heavily consumed, but today that’s changing and you’ll see many varieties incorporated into local delicacies. No prizes for guessing that the sweets here are delicious, with all sorts of variations on cream cakes, strudels and tarts.

Be prepared to spend a little bit extra and select a decent restaurant to really get the taste of some authentic local cuisine. Lower-cost international restaurants really aren’t much different, if at all, to anywhere else.

The city is also the centre of Austrian beer. You’ll find some great examples but watch out for the strength!

Nightlife

After incorporation into Austria-Hungary, the city rapidly became a quiet provincial town. That’s helped to preserve it but it has also shaped its modern character; today its nightlife is sophisticated and restrained rather than riotous. Expect some great restaurants, cafés, bars, chic pubs and a few relatively low-level clubs. You won't find ‘cutting edge’ excesses, but then that's often part of the appeal and charm.
