Lake Naivasha is one of only two freshwater lakes in Kenya and is a prime location for bird watching holidays. The curious phenomenon of Lake Naivasha is that there is no identifiable source for the freshwater that feeds the lake that would account for its size. Many speculate upon the possibility of a volcanic fissure deep beneath water as the primary feeding source and outlet. Whatever the source, the fresh waters of the lake create an ideal habitat and feeding ground for over 400 different species of birds throughout the year.

A Vast Landscape

The 139km of surface area that Lake Naivasha covers has developed into a rich swampland that, along with the huge variety of bird species, is also home to a large Hippopotamus population. Bird watching holidays have become very popular on the shores of the lake, which is also where the author of ‘Born Free’, Joy Adamson, lived for a time while writing her book. The dense vegetation found along the lake’s edge supports a huge wildlife population and Brimstone Canaries, Red-billed Firefinches and Grey-capped Warblers are frequently sighted.

Rich Opportunities

Lake Naivasha continually proves its worth to wildlife lovers on dedicated bird watching holidays. The abundance of fish in the lake provides sustenance to numerous large waterfowl species, and Pied Kingfishers and Fish Eagles are frequently seen alongside Great and Long-tailed Cormorants on the lake’s swampy edges. With the large numbers of avian species also comes the opportunity to witness some beautiful and curious behaviours in the wild. The Black Herons that feed from the lake have a unique fishing technique, whereby they create a canopy over their heads while fishing. Many ornithologists have speculated upon the purpose of this action, but regardless of its reason the natural behaviour of these great birds is fascinating and enjoyable to watch for hours.

Quality and Quantity

Other species of birds that are frequently found at the lake are the Grey-backed Fiscal, during times of higher rainfall, as well as the beautiful Black-lored Babbler. This distinctive looking bird tends to have pale tipped feathers on its head, which create a stunning halo effect. This area of Kenya is also well known for its large population of Lovebirds and it is common to see them in the wild as well as being sold by street vendors on roadsides. Visitors are encouraged not to purchase the birds and release them, however, as this perpetuates the trade.

Lake Naivasha is frequently viewed as a convenient over-night stop for travellers on the way to Nairobi. However, dedicated bird watching holidays to the lake will benefit from plenty of sighting opportunities for a huge array of different species. That, in conjunction with the abundant mammal wildlife populationPsychology Articles, makes Lake Naivasha a worthy destination in its own right.
