Mantle plumes, which are columns of hot rock approximately 100 kilometers in diameter, ascend from deep within the Earth due to high temperatures reaching up to 200 degrees Celsius. These plumes rise at an average rate of 10 centimeters per year.

As a result, the islands are essentially the peaks of volcanic cones, with some still exhibiting active volcanic behavior. The Galapagos region is among the most volcanically active areas in the world, having recorded 55 significant eruptions in historical times. Notable recent eruptions occurred on Marchena in 1991 and Fernandina in 1995.

Diversity in Volcanic Structures

The Galapagos Islands feature two distinct types of volcanic formations. In the western part of the archipelago, on Isabela and Fernandina islands, large shield volcanoes dominate the landscape, resembling soup plates or deep cauldrons. In contrast, the eastern islands are characterized by smaller volcanoes with gentler slopes. The variation between these volcanic types is attributed to the thickness of the lithospheric layer. The shield volcanoes, with their unique plate-like shape, are relatively rare, and their exact origins remain a subject of scientific inquiry.

The Pinnacle of the Archipelago

Isabela Island boasts the highest point in the Galapagos: Wolf Volcano, which soars to an elevation of 1,707 meters and plunges to a depth of 2,000 fathoms (approximately 1,852 meters). Many of the archipelago's volcanoes carry multiple names, reflecting the islands' rich history. Most maps provide a comprehensive listing of these names.

Unique Geological Insights

The Galapagos Islands offer a wealth of information for geologists and volcanologists. According to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program, the Galapagos hotspot is responsible for the creation of the islands, with the oldest islands located in the eastern part of the archipelago, dating back approximately 3.2 million years. The youngest islands, such as Fernandina and the western part of Isabela, are less than 700,000 years old, indicating the westward movement of the Nazca Plate over the hotspot.

The Galapagos Islands are not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a significant natural laboratory for the study of evolutionary processes, largely due to their volcanic origins and isolation. The islands' unique geology has played a crucial role in the development of endemic species, famously inspiring Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection.
