Good beaches par for the course at the best Maputo hotels

Maputo Hotels, such as the Southern Sun Maputo, give travellers easy access to some of the most beautiful beaches Maputo has to offer.

A coastline extending for 2500km. Numerous tropical islands . Great weather during much of the year... There’s no doubt that Mozambique offers among the most scenic beaches on the planet. And of course, where good swimming, diving or fishing charters can be arranged in the capital, you can be sure to find some good Maputo hotels.

There some super stretches of coast at Zavala and Závora, as well as at Guinjata Bay and Baía dos Cocos. In the provinces of Zambezia and Cabo Delgado, the best beaches include Zalala and Wimbe respectively. The beaches of Beira in Sofala Province are among the country’s most frequented, and Praia da Maceneta in the vicinity of Maputo is popular with surfers who get there by taking a boat from their Maputo hotels.

The flight from Johannesburg to Maputo takes an hour, and from the capital it’s a short hop to and between some of Mozambique’s various islands. Benguerra Island and Flamingo Bay boast a number of the nation’s most stunning beaches on the Bazaruto archipelago off the coast of Inhambane. Also beautiful are the beaches of the more remote islands of Vamizi and Matemo on the Quirimbas archipelago – also accessible from Maputo.

The hotel options range from some humble little places to grand buildings including some built back in colonial times that retain some of the rich Portuguese heritage.

Maputo itself is a city offering plenty to tourists. The centre of the capital comprises office blocks as well as charming structures that are more than 100 years old. There are balconies with wrought-iron railings and examples of 1920s architecture. The railway station dates back to 1910, having been designed by the same man (Gustave Eiffel) who designed Paris’s Eiffel Tower.

Portuguese is more widely used than any of the local African languages. And one of the good Maputo hotels to stay at is the Southern Sun Maputo on the city’s beachfront, ideal for relaxing at and taking in the views.

After being ruined by a cyclone in 2007, Maputo’s main beach is now in good shape once again. However if you’re going to spend any length of time in one of the Maputo hotels, it’s recommended that you take a ferry ride to the town of Macaneta up the coast. Here there is a well-maintained beach that’s safe for swimming and a fishing community whose very affordable seafood can be enjoyed in the local restaurants.
