There are five different Pacific salmon species, with one of the most targeted being the Alaska king salmon.  Landing one of these fish is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill.  However, it definitely will not be easy.  Kings are very big and strong and definitely will not go down without a fight.

If you really want to enjoy a memorable experience, then it is necessary to travel to Alaska at just the right time.  If you go during February, then you will likely end up being disappointed.  Between the months of May and July, you can enjoy some of the best fishing Alaska has to offer.   To make thing even better, these months usually provide the best weather too.

As you may have heard, Alaska's weather is a bit funny.  During the fishing season, you may be exposed to 24 hours of daylight.  You will not be able to rely on the position of the sun to determine the best fishing times.  Therefore, you will need to look at the time to determine when to go out on the water.  Times that would normally be dusk or dawn are ideal.

You should be aware that Alaska king salmon are found in many places throughout the state.  That I one reason you will need to decide on the best destination for you.  Two of the most popular destinations are the Togiak River and the Kenai River in Alaska.  Fish start making their runs in this river during June.  In addition to Kings, there are also other Pacific salmon species to go after.

Another popular option is the Copper River.  You would be wise to time your trip after the middle of May.  This is when king salmon and other fish start making their runs back to the river to spawn.  Instead of fishing the rivers, you could also catch these fish in the ocean.

When it comes to fishing in the ocean, it is vital to choose an appropriate lure.  When swimming around in deeper water, king salmon are much more likely to take artificial herring or cut herring bait.

Fishing in the rivers and streams is a bit different.  Some of your best options include pieces of shrimp or fish, wiggle wartsArticle Submission, or steel spoons.  The lures need to be big and flashy so the king salmon will be attracted to them.

It is not enough to choose your lures wisely if you want to catch Alaska king salmon.  It is also a good idea to hire a guide so you can learn useful techniques as well as the best locations to go.
