The Resurgence of Egyptian Tourism

Post-2011,A 10-Day Journey Through Egypt: From Ancient Wonders to Red Sea Riviera Articles Egypt's tourism industry faced a significant downturn. However, by 2019, the sector began to recover, with increasing numbers of tourists each year. According to the World Tourism Organization, Egypt saw a 21% rise in tourist arrivals in 2019, signaling a positive trend for the country's travel industry.

Choosing the Right Tour Operator

For my trip, I opted for a local Egyptian travel agency, "Trips in Egypt," which offered a comprehensive 10-day tour. Local agencies often provide more authentic and cost-effective experiences compared to international operators who may include hefty commissions.

My 10-Day Itinerary in Egypt

Day 1: Arrival in Cairo

Upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, I was greeted by a representative from "Trips in Egypt" and transferred to the Steigenberger Hotel. The evening was spent enjoying a dinner cruise on the Nile, complete with a belly dancing show and a Tannoura performance.

Day 2: Exploring the Pyramids of Giza

The day began with a guided tour of the Giza pyramid complex, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. The tour also included a visit to the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple, where ancient mummification processes took place.

Day 3: Aswan’s Ancient Marvels

A short flight took me to Aswan, where I explored the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the beautiful Philae Temple dedicated to the goddess Isis.

Day 4: Abu Simbel Temples

An early morning drive led to the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel, created during the reign of Ramesses II. These temples are a testament to ancient Egyptian engineering and artistry.

Day 5: Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples

While cruising down the Nile, I visited the dual temple of Kom Ombo and the well-preserved Edfu Temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus.

Day 6: Luxor’s East and West Banks

In Luxor, I explored the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut on the West Bank, followed by the Karnak Temple Complex on the East Bank.

Day 7-8: Relaxing in Hurghada

I spent two leisurely days at a luxury hotel in Hurghada, enjoying the Red Sea’s splendid beaches, vibrant marine life, and optional activities like snorkeling and desert safaris.

Day 9: Cairo’s Cultural Treasures

Back in Cairo, I visited the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel of Salah El-Din, and the bustling Khan El Khalili Bazaar.

Day 10: Departure

On the final day, I was assisted with all departure formalities at Cairo International Airport before heading back home.

Surprising Insights from My Egyptian Tour

  1. Safety: Contrary to common perceptions, I found Egypt to be quite safe for tourists, with stringent security measures in place.
  2. Local Interaction: Egyptian children and locals were exceptionally friendly, adding a warm, personal touch to the journey.
  3. Culinary Delights: Egyptian cuisine was both unique and flavorful, with an array of dishes that were a delight to the palate.
  4. Tipping Culture: Tipping is an integral part of the service industry in Egypt, often expected in various contexts.
  5. Historical Sites: The historical sites were even more impressive in person than in photographs or descriptions.

This 10-day itinerary provides a comprehensive experience of what Egypt has to offer, from its ancient monuments to its modern-day charms.
