Odd Travel Insurance Claims

Deciding whether or not to invest in single-trip, family or annual travel insurance isn’t always easy.

Perhaps you think that “it could never happen”? If so, you might find the following instances of real life and accepted claims convince you otherwise.

No Buts…

One claim related to damage caused to a family’s vehicle caused by a deer who frantically and repeatedly kept head-butting their windscreen.

Riding the Waves

You might be surprised to know that two passengers on a cruise apparently lost their false teeth overboard – one while singing. It must have been a sea-shanty!

Hot Food

Another traveller suffered burns injuries in a bar where a display gave off live flames as an entertainment effect. The person concerned had stayed in the bar watching the ‘effects’, having failed to realise that this time the bar was actually on fire and that people had been asked to leave with urgency as a major incident had developed.

Oh Snow It Isn’t

One annual travel insurance provider paid out a claim for someone who had purchased new skis for an eagerly anticipated holiday but then couldn’t use them because upon arrival in the mountains, freakish weather meant there was actually no snow to ski on.

Trendy Forest Dressers

Another claim was for the replacement of clothes stolen from a bungalow by local monkeys – who then considerately distributed their clothes amongst the troop.

A Blazing Beauty

At a wedding celebration, one bride was unlucky enough to discover that her wedding dress had caught fire as she passed nearby a barbeque. Fortunately she escaped injury as her new husband picked her up and threw her into the sea.

Helping Future Archaeologists

One odd claim related to a couple who went for a quick dip leaving their two younger children on the sand. When they went back to the beach, their children admitted to having buried the family’s video recorder in the sand – sadly in a location they now couldn’t remember! It was never seen again.

Distractions

Another holidaymaker suffered injury having walked into a bus shelter (literally ‘into’ that is). He explained this as being due to the fact he’d been walking along looking in the other direction at some scantily-clad women in swimsuits.

Driving You Nuts

One of the unluckier holidaymakers was the woman who suffered head injuries due to sitting under a tree and then being hit by a falling coconut.

A Good Laugh?

The above cases may be odd but they shouldn’t be assumed to be a laughing matter.
When you’re on holiday, you could easily fall victim to mishap or illness and if you do, you might be facing major bills that in reality you have no way of paying - unless you have the protection of single-trip or annual travel insurance.

So, don’t just chuckle at these cases and think bad things couldn’t happen to you when abroad, because they can!

Think carefully about the risks and if you’re in any doubt, make sure you have annual travel insurance or some other form of cover in place.
