The constantly developing and culturally rich capital city of Peru, Lima, may just be the departure point for most Machu Picchu trips, but spend some time in this fabulous city and you won’t be disappointed. With a wide selection of museums, parks, and restaurants this ever evolving metropolis is worth a visit on your Peru vacation.

To indulge in the history and culture, head to downtown Lima, known as Lima Centro. Home to the Plaza de Armas and many of Lima’s most significant buildings and museums, it is an area travelers must explore on their Peru vacation. This main square was designated on the day the city was founded in 1535 and houses the Government Palace, the Grand Cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace of Lima and the Municipal Palace. Though the Government palace is no longer open to the public, the plaza is a must stop on your tour of Lima. Also in Lima Centro you will find the Iglesia San Francisco, famous for its catacombs and extensive library, this church is also spectacular architecturally.

Find culture and entertainment in the district of Barranco, which has developed over the last few years as a very hip bohemian area, full of restaurants, bars, and cultural activities. Walk the streets of the plaza which are lined with artists and street vendors, shop for hand crafted jewelry or other handmade goods, or simply immerse into conversation with some of the locals. Barranco also provides access to the ocean, head to the Bajada de los Banos, which is a café and restaurants lined street that will lead you down to the water.

Finally stop in Miraflores, Lima’s most visited district. The district of Miraflores contains some of Lima’s best restaurants, shops, hotels, and nightlife. Find yourself in the center of it all at Parque Kennedy, a beautiful open park, which is surrounded by restaurants and shops. The park is always hosting activities, from art exhibits and craft fairs to dancing and live music, this area is lively no matter what time of day. Miraflores provides some of the best nightlife to be found in Lima, find many of Lima’s elite in the area as well as tourists just passing through. Just a few blocks from the park is Larcomar, where you will find spectacular ocean views, shopping, and more restaurants. The Larcomar shopping mall is built into the cliff’s and provides views as well as upscale shopping, a bowling alley, and a wide variety of restaurants. Take a stroll through Parque del Amor, or Park of Love, which is set on the edge of the cliffs where you can watch the sunset over the ocean.
