Many smaller families favor the SUV experience because it tends to seem like a large enough motor vehicle but one that's a little bit classier then the mini-van.  If selecting an SUV however there are a few things that you may perhaps want to keep in mind.  For starters an SUV although a large-sized car or truck is actually not as large as a mini-van.  A mini-van has a lot of extra storage space that an SUV doesn’t have and if you are heading on a road trip that will take you hundreds of miles from home you will find that having enough space to tuck away all the essentials without having them encroach on the passenger compartment is a big asset. 
 
Of course, an SUV is an excellent selection for those looking at a weekend getaway with four or five people or for  individuals who  know they will be traveling in rugged terrain.  A roof carrier or luggage rack may be available through the rental car agency if you find the need to take an SUV but need a bit extra storage room but this will of course cost you a bit more per day.
 
When it comes to renting a mini-van most leasing agencies will offer you extras with your van rental such as a GPS system, child safety seat, bike or luggage rack, or even some movie players for in the auto.  Of course, it's important that you assess this need or purchase these items on your own.  Figuring out how much the purchase cost will be versus the rental cost might just find you making a few purchases in advance of your holiday travel.
 
Vacation travel with the family can be great fun but it's important that you select the right vehicle for both safety and comfort.  Keeping in mind that a little extra space can go a long, long way when traveling with children and having the space to spread out a little can really help to make for a more peaceful trip.
