This park is not accessible by road so in order to visit or stay overnight you will need to take a water taxi through the park´s endless network of canals, lagoons and channels. As you taxi out to your lodge, you will ride by countless animals hidden in the lush foliage or beneath the water, including the endangered manatee! This isolation has kept the Tortuguero village virtually untouched and isolated from much of the outside world as it is protected by the canals, protected forests and inaccessible by land.
The village is not far from the Caribbean Conservation Corporation´s museum that is devoted to the vast biodiversity in this small ecological hot spot. The largest draws to this center are the green sea turtle that are protected by the CCC in partnership with the local villagers. It is highly recommended that you enjoy a tour through the museum to understand the history behind the park, the gems it has to offer, and the importance of the protection of many of the species that live here.
The Park is busiest from July until October because of the protected breeding ground for the green sea turtle. So if you can make it to Costa Rica during this time, be sure to book at least an overnight trip to this unique and beautiful Caribbean paradise. During this period there are night time tours organized to take you back into the park so that you can watch the adult female turtles return to their place of birth to lay their eggs. Your guide will help you spot them before they disappear back into the sea to wait for the young to hatch.
During the day there are many different tours that will take you through the different corners of the park. You will have guides helping you and pointing out monkeys, exotic butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, birds and caimans as you navigate the canals. After you return from your exploration of the park, the lodges in this reserve have amazing amenities including spa services, a pool, great bar and a restaurant that boasts a wide ranging menu of both international and local cuisines. Year round they also offer a tour of the park that leaves before dawn. This provides guest an opportunity to watch the world come to life as day breaks. The slow increase in light and sounds is a beautiful way to start the day and you will have a chance to spot some of the less seen animals of the wilderness as they start their day.
No matter when you visit this park, it is a must see in Costa Rica. Take your time to enjoy either on a leisurely boat or on your own man powered canoe. You will leave feeling more connect to the earth and fulfilled that you have experience one of the most beautiful spots in Costa Rica.
