Salamanca's ancient architecture and your Holiday Rentals in SpainIf you happen to be a fan of ancient architecture book your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN in the city of Salamanca. This beautiful city is home to the best arcaded square in all of Spain; not only that, it also has a magnificent cathedral. Both of which are waiting for you to come and explore all their nooks and crannies. There is an outstanding arcaded square situated in Salamanca that is above all others and a must see when deciding where to base your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN. The square I am referring to is the Plaza Mayor with its construction starting in 1729 and not finished until 1755. The square was built and designed in the Baroque style by the architect Alberto Churriguera in the heart of Salamanca. The north side of this harmonious square is home to the city hall. Like a lot of Spanish squares the Plaza Mayor is the centre of Spanish life: this is where the locals meet and greet while discussing the day’s activities or just have a cup of coffee while they people watch. If you need some shopping there is a covered market through the Arch of the Bull; speaking of which try and imagine a bullfight taking place in this square today as it did a hundred years ago. If you take a close look at the pillars and spandrels you can see the medallions with people’s names inscribed on them who were part of Salamanca’s history. As we said earlier this is a good place to set and have a cup of coffee while contemplating the day’s activities, and if you prefer a meal there are a number of restaurants situated around the square where you can absorb the Spanish atmosphere. If you have time stop at Salamanca's new cathedral, we say new but construction started in the 15th century. This magnificent cathedral in all of its splendour was built at the request of King Ferdinand the Catholic monarch. The architects Anton de Egas and Alonso Rodriges were granted the commission to build this cathedral which started in 1513 and was finished in 1733. If you take a close look at the cathedral you will notice different styles such as the original Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque that start to creep into the structure due to the length of time it took to build the cathedral. As it took well over two hundred years to complete there were a number of architects over seeing its building including its original architect’s son Juan Gil de Hontanon. There is one interesting story about the cathedral that you can see when you visit and that is the astronaut carved into the stonework during the restoration of the jambs whose stones had deteriorated. This was accompanied by a new stonemason; I wonder what he was thinking at the time. Choosing Salamanca as your base of operations when booking your HOLIDAY RENTALS IN SPAIN couldn't have been any better if you are a fan of ancient architecture. With two cathedrals and an arcade square, which just happens to be the best one in all of Spain Article Tags: Ancient Architecture, Holiday Rentals Source: Free Articles from ArticlesFactory.com
