Summertime Festival in Cyprus To Enjoy On Your Paphos Villa Holiday

Step back in time with the Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, with innovative performances of these intensely moving, dramatic plays by international companies. The highlight of this year's festival must be a performance of Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" by the Zhejiang Beijing Opera. The tale of the king whose world unravels when he discovers his true identity, and that of his wife, is as tense and gripping as any tv thriller, and with an equally gory end for its antihero. Performances take place in the ancient Odeon, the theatre in the Kato Pafos Archaeological Park. A wonderful opportunity to experience something totally different on your Paphos villa holiday.

The main arts event of the year is the Pafos Aphrodite Festival, when the square at Pafos Castle resounds to the world's favourite operas. In 2011, that opera is "Les Contes d'Hoffmann", (Tales of Hoffmann), by Jacques Offenbach, he of "can-can' music fame. The opera follows the life and loves of a poet who has worse luck with women than any resident of Albert Square! First he falls for the perfect woman who turns out to be a mechanical doll, then a girl who sings herself to death, and then a woman who tries to steal his soul. And lurking in the background, an evil genius manipulating his fate, and a protective Muse in disguise. Great tunes, including the famous "Barcarolle duet", currently used in the UK Barclays adverts! Ballet fans get their turn at the Odeon too, when the Moscovia ballet company present the very appropriate "Night of Aphrodite" in July. A hymn to the Goddess of love and eternal youth, the Goddess of desire, sensuality and passion, with the music of Carl Orff's choral masterpiece "Carmina Burana" (that's the music behind the Old Spice advert and the X Factor judges' dramatic music to you and me!)

Didn't get any tickets for the 2012 London Olympics? Don't despair, there's international standard sporting events to enjoy during your Paphos villa holiday, and you won't even have to break a sweat! For example, the best young archers in Europe compete for the Archery Youth European Cup in July.
