A detailed survey conducted by two female psychiatrists sheds light on the sociodemographic profiles, mental health, and housing preferences of men residing in a hostel. This study provides a unique glimpse into the challenges and needs of this often overlooked population.
The research was spearheaded by Dr. S. D. and Dr. B., who familiarized themselves with the hostel environment through preliminary visits. Their objective was to understand the residents' backgrounds, health issues, and housing preferences. The hostel, serving as a temporary abode for many, was visited weekly to register newcomers and invite them to participate in the study.
The researchers employed a semi-structured interview format that included questions on social, demographic, and psychiatric aspects. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, Revised (DSM-III-R) and other tools like the Global Assessment Scale and CAGE Questionnaire were used to assess psychiatric conditions and substance use.
Out of the initial contacts, 27 residents left before they could participate, and six declined to be interviewed. Ultimately, 40 men participated in interviews that lasted between 45 to 90 minutes over a 26-week period.
The high prevalence of mental health issues and the complex social backgrounds of the hostel residents highlight the need for targeted support services. These findings underscore the importance of integrating mental health services with housing and employment support for this vulnerable population.
This survey provides crucial data that can help shape policies and programs aimed at improving the lives of men living in hostels. By addressing their specific needs, we can aid in their reintegration into society and improve their overall well-being.

This comprehensive survey not only highlights the challenges faced by hostel-dwelling men but also opens avenues for future research and policy-making to better support this demographic.
