Find out what are the basic you should consider when travelling abroad.
Whether you're headed overseas to promote your company at an international exhibition, planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world or simply hopping on a place for a two week all-inclusive beach holiday you are, in some way, continuing a British tradition.
Brits have always been travelers. In the 16th century Sir Walter Raleigh led expeditions to explore new territories and claim them for Queen and Country. In the early 19th Charles Darwin traveled the world and revolutionized our understanding of our place in the universe. The later 19th and 20th centuries saw the development of mass travel and package holidays. Wherever you go the British have always been there, exploring, developing, colonizing, developing trade and sometimes just enjoying the weather or the view.
It's hard to define exactly what makes us such avid travelers. Some suggestions are pragmatic- as inhabitants of a smallish island surrounded by sea we had to build decent ships to get anywhere much, and once you've build it you might as well carry on sailing. Other theories are faintly humorous or ironic - maybe the British weather drove us to seek fairer climes.
Depending on your personal viewpoint you might see British exploration as proof of spirit and enterprise or regard it as evidence of a willingness to exploit less developed places or people. Either way it's hard to deny the courage of those early explorers, they risked shipwreck, scurvy, pirates and the potential of being castaway on an unknown shore for many years.
Even if they avoided all of these fates, explorers left the British shores not knowing when or even if they would see their loved ones again. They also knew that communication whilst they were away would be at best difficult, and in many instances impossible.
It's hard to believe that the first transcontinental phone call was made less than 100 years ago (1926 to be precise). The first mobile phone was demonstrated in 1973 and it was not until the beginning of the 21st century that Skype was launched allowing instant cheap or free international calls.
When you set off on your journey the chances are you'll be taking a smart phone or notepad with you. Using a roaming sim UK service you can you stay in touch with all your family and friends. You won't be confined to audio either, you can post videos, download the pictures of your travels, catch up on gossip from work or make a video call to your Mum!
Whether you're going for a week or a year, enjoy your travels. Don't forget to spare a thought for your bold and brave ancestors who risked so much on their travels.
