The Parish Church of Sant Romà: A Hidden Gem

On the top of our list of must-sees in Lloret de Mar is the Parish Church of Sant Romà. It is a stunning place and a significant monument in the town. Originally the building was used for coal storage, because of its location relative to the sea, but then it became something much more wonderful.

History of The Church

Built between 1509 and 1522, the church was designed with traditional Catalan Gothic features as well as fortifications, such as a drawbridge. Originally the church had only a single nave but during the 16th and 17th centuries, the building was expanded significantly, with the addition of side chapels, altars, altarpieces and other rooms.

The nave is particularly attractive with highly intricate decorative features that lent themselves perfectly to being painted. Today this part of the church is a gem of modern art. The El Baptisteri and El Santíssim Sagrament Chapel are the work of Bonaventura Conill i Montobbio, who in 1916, designed both in a Modernista style. Other works include the stone sculpture of The Virgin of Loreto by Monjo.

The Altarpiece

Made by Pere Serafí, with help from painters and goldsmiths Jaume Fontanet and Jaume Forner, the altarpiece took four years to complete. The five panels each represent different scenes, with the even panels depicting images of the Passion, the martyrdom of Sant Romà, and the Virgin Mary, and the odd panels dedicated to images of saints.

There are more panels in the El Baptisteri Chapel that are preserved parts of the old altarpiece and are equally exquisite, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the life of Sant Romà. All of the panels display a significant amount of painting work, as well as gilding and the addition of fine gold in the architectural features.

Where

Right in the centre of town, just off the main street of Carrer de la Vila, the church is located in Plaça de l'Església. Easy to stumble upon when wandering the back streets, the church is a prominent feature.
