A Century-Long Tradition of Artistic Excellence

The Venice Biennale,The Prestige and Evolution of the Venice Biennale Articles established in 1895, has long been at the forefront of introducing and promoting new artistic movements. This multidisciplinary event is renowned for its International Art Exhibition, which has seen 51 editions, and the Venice International Film Festival, now in its 62nd iteration. The Biennale also includes the International Architecture Exhibition, which has been held 9 times, as well as the Music Festival and Theatre Festival, with 49 and 37 editions respectively. More recently, the Dance Festival has been added, enriching the cultural tapestry with its 3 editions.

The Biennale's influence extends beyond these events, with editorial initiatives that amplify its presence across national and international media. The Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts (ASAC) plays a crucial role in preserving the Biennale's storied history.

Transformation into a Foundation

A legislative decree in January 2004 marked a significant transition for the Biennale, transforming it into a Foundation. This change aimed to rejuvenate the Biennale's potential as a magnet for excellence, ensuring its impact resonates beyond the major exhibitions and throughout the artistic landscape year-round.

Venues of Global Attraction

The Foundation's venues, which welcome an ever-growing international audience (320,000 visitors annually), are not owned by the Foundation itself. Instead, they are provided by the Venice Municipality or secured through agreements with various entities. Key locations include the Giardini di Castello for visual arts and architecture, the Palazzo del Cinema and Palazzo del Casino at the Lido for cinema, and the Arsenale for visual arts and architecture, as well as the Teatro alle Tese and Teatro Piccolo Arsenale for dance, music, and theater.

The 2009 Art Biennale: Making Words

The 2009 Art Biennale, titled "Making Words" and directed by Daniel Birnbaum, was open to the public from June 7 to November 22. The event spanned various venues in Venice, including the Giardini dell’Arsenale, with previews on June 4-6. That year, the Biennale honored artists Yoko Ono and John Baldessari with the Golden Lions Honorary awards, recognizing their significant contributions to contemporary art.

Infrastructure and Renewal

Concurrent with the 53rd exhibition, a renewal project was underway, including the construction of a new bridge connecting the Arsenale to the city. The former Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale was rebranded as the "Padiglione Italia," while the Italian Pavilion at the Giardini was transformed into the "Palazzo delle Esposizioni della Biennale." Additionally, the Tese delle Vergini dell’Arsenale hosted the "Collaudi" exhibition, curated by Beatrice Buscaroli and Luca Beatrice.
