At some point of the year, our day-to-day routine and worries leave us asking for a holiday. We all need a break to free ourselves from various things that tie us down. However, in today’s economic climate, not everyone can afford to go on a holiday very often. So, when such a holiday is planned, it is but natural to try to save as much as possible and yet not compromise on fun.  Planning a budget holiday does not mean that it is going to be any less enjoyable. If you act promptly and plan smartly, not only do you have a great holiday to look forward to, but you are also left with additional savings.

1.    Book in advance or last minute: Booking your flight tickets and hotel rooms in advance, more often than not means you end up saving a lot more. If possible, try booking your flight tickets a year in advance as soon as the airline companies release their rates. This will enable you to get your tickets at a cheaper rate and thereby save more. But, on the other hand, if you book your tickets at the last minute you might get lucky and get an unsold hotel room or airline seat at a bargain.

2.    Set a budget: It is very easy for us to get carried away when on a vacation and overspend. This keeps us from planning more holidays. If you set a budget in advance before you leave for your vacation and decide how much money is to be spent each day, you can sit back and enjoy your holiday without any worries.  When expenses are handled in such an organized fashion, your vacation need not give you any reason to worry.

3.    Travel in a group: Instead of planning a holiday with only your immediate family, plan a trip with your entire family or a group of friends, and get them all involved. When a group comes into the picture, all the expenses to be incurred for the trip are spread across the entire group of people and thereby helps in reducing  individual costs. The more the merrier!

4.    Check in online: Many airlines now charge you to check in at airports. So, check in online and avoid this additional cost as well.

5.    Use a prepaid Travel card: Using your credit card or plain cash can increase your expenditure while on a holiday. Instead, use a prepaid travel money card, which lets you spend and refill as much or as little as you want.

6.    Use public transport: It is not always necessary to hire a car when you go on a vacation. Most places have an efficient public transport system, with metro rails, cabs, buses and even trams as options. By choosing public transport as opposed to hiring a car, you save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on petrol and car rentals. Some places are also best explored on foot. When you walk down the streets instead of travelling in a car, you take in everything that comes your way without missing out on any attraction.

7.    Sample the local cuisine: Generally, in most places, popular tourist spots tend to have restaurants that charge exorbitant prices as compared to smaller, less popular restaurants. So, stay clear of such spots and instead choose a smaller restaurant, which serves the same local cuisine, at a more reasonable price.
