When Renting A Car, Read The Contract First

If you buy into the hype that all rental car agencies are throwing out, then it can cost you a lot more to rent a car for a vacation or for a business trip. When you get done with that car and get to the airport, you might think that you have all of the details worked out and it's easy to go home and unpack, but there's still that pesky rental car bill that you have to take care of and the charges on the bill might be an awful lot more than you expect.

One of the biggest ways in which rental car companies make their money is with all the extras. This is why you may be offered such a low base rate upfront and may believe that you are getting a deal. It is important to not only acknowledge the base rate but also what is and isn't included in this rate quote. After all, it is no fun to return your rental vehicle only to find out that you owe the company three or four times the amount you were quoted. And believe you me, this happens to thousands of people each year.

For instance, mileage used to be a given when it came to the final bill,. But that is no longer the case. No longer can you just use the car to drive anywhere you want without putting on a large amount of dollars onto your tab. Even if you look at the contract, the charges might seem minimal until the bill comes and you have to deal with the fact that you drove that car a lot more than you through and that the mileage is going to cost you in a big way.

Another thing that can really run that base rate up is additional taxes and surcharges. Now most people consider this amount to be negligible but depending on when and where you are renting you might be surprised the way in which these items can really raise your out of pocket expense. To help avoid surprises it is always best to ask the rental car agent to add this amount to the base rate for you to give you a more accurate idea of how much that rental will be costing you per day and can also help you to more accurately compare the rates of different companies against one another.

The best thing to do is to just ask the rental car agency point blank what extra charges to expect at the end of the trip. There are a lot of questions you have to be ready to ask in order to save yourself for a big letdown after that vacation or business trip. Make sure there are no unanswered questions so you can rent that car and know what you are getting into.

Renting a car does not have to be a difficult process and it can lead to a great vacation, but you just want to make sure the vacation is not a disaster when the first thing you see when you get to the drop off agency is a huge bill with tons of unexpected charges. Take care of it before you go on your trip and then have a good time.
