Why Puri in Odisha is one of the top tourist destinations in India?

The article highlights the top reasons for a tourist to visit puri in Odisha , it includes information on sightseeing spots and the most popular attractions in the area.

Puri, the holy city by the sea is one of the four holiest places (dhams) for the Hindus. Pilgrims from far flung parts of the country visit Puri to offer prayers at the 65 metre high Jagannath Temple built in the 12th century. The intense veneration for Lord Jagannath, or Lord of the Universe, reaches its zenith during the annual festival of chariots, the 'Rath Yatra'. This festival has been attracting pilgrims and tourists for centuries and the passage of time has certainly not diminished the pomp and ceremony that is associated with it. About 4000 frantic devotees draw the enormous raths with huge wheels, carrying images of the deities with devotional dancers and musicians accompanying them. The Rath Festival is believed to attract more that 2,00,000 devotees to Puri each year and few are aware that this festival of massive chariots is responsible for giving the English language the word 'juggernaut'.

Puri also has a long and attractive beach and this pilgrimage town is also the abode of artisans and craftsmen who produce a wide range of unique handicrafts. An excursion to visit the 'art village' of Raghurajpur is highly recommended, because no village is more involved in preserving India's priceless heritage and skills. Here everyone seems to be an established artist or an aspiring one. Art overflows in Raghurajpur, little girls sit outside simple houses with thatched roofs painting a mural, craftsmen carve effigies out of wood and paint them in vivid colours, and gifted artists use delicate brushes to create masterpieces on traditional parchments known as Patachitra, with painstaking finesse.

With so many pilgrims and tourists visiting Puri, there is no shortage of accommodation and hotels to suit all budgets are available. The well laid out Coco Palms faces the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal and is situated very close to the beach. Other good options in the up market category include the Toshali Sands and Mayfair Beach Resort and Orissa Tourism's Panthanivas offers value for money.
