Why Take a Weekend Break

A recent poll conducted by Northamptonshire Enterprise, Ltd., revealed that travel time is one of the biggest concerns for Brits considering weekend breaks, with the majority responding that they prefer destinations within two hours of home.†

Traffic jams and road works were also reported as frustrations that might be keeping Brits closer to home on weekends.

This, combined with the constraints that a sluggish economy is putting upon family budgets, may explain why some are foregoing weekends away altogether. Yet weekend breaks can be vital in reducing the stress experienced during the work week. Research has shown that chronic stress damages the health. Fortunately, there a ways to enjoy a weekend break without travelling far from home.

For overnight stays near home, seek out local bed and breakfast establishments. Plan well ahead to ascertain when the rates are least expensive. To spend the least amount of time on the road possible, ask when the traffic is lightest. To further cut travel time, choose accommodations close to the places you will ultimately be visiting.

One way to enjoy the weekend at or near home is to 'play tourist'. Taking a guided tour or joining a sightseeing caravan can give a fresh perspective on a familiar area. Some excursions focus on a particular theme, such as places with literary references or areas used as film locations, while others may relate to special interests, such as gardening or bird-watching.

Speciality classes are another option for weekend activities close to home. Community centres offer a variety of courses. From courses featuring the creative arts, such as stained glass techniques and ceramics, to more active classes such as yoga or rock-climbing, chances are there is a weekend course that can refresh and revitalize body and spirit for the workweek ahead.

When searching for activities for weekends near home, donít neglect to consider local parks and museums as well. In addition to their ongoing collections, museums offer special exhibits throughout the year, sometimes with associated activities. Parks, too, have their own changing schedule of events, and are worth investigating.

For a weekend getaway that can refresh the soul, consider volunteering for a local non-profit organisation. Join a community garden that supports the hungry. Help paint a mural for a local community centre. Use acquired skills to teach youth to repair a bicycle or sew a quilt.

The importance of weekend breaks should not be dismissed. Weekends not only offer a time to relax and rechargeFree Articles, but offer opportunities to spend meaningful time with friends and family.
