Recently, I have been looking to develop a checklist of things to prepare before you start your apartment search.  Based on my own meandering experience and that of friends and others, here are some helpful hints when apartment searching.  Here is a comprehensive list of everything you need to do before you begin your search!

1) Make a shopping list in order to know your preferences.  Do you have to have a dishwasher?  Fans?  Fireplace?  You may not find everything you’re looking for in one place, but you will at least know what you want.

2) Know your deal-breakers.  This can consist of location (too far from work/family/school) or apartment size.

3) Take measurements of your larger furnishings.  This is a great tip!  This will ensure that all your furniture will fit in your new place… and what you may have to sell on Craigslist before you move.

4) Prepare documents like a credit check, references (previous landlords, if any) and pay stubs to give your new landlord.  You may also want to call your references in advance to let them know they may be contacted regarding you and your new place.

5) Meet your neighbors!  If you can, try to meet people who are walking their dogs or swimming at the pool.  It will give you a good feel for the neighborhood.

6) Ask to see the specific unit that you will be renting.  Sometimes it is not possible, but it is nice to see the condition of the unit you are actually moving into rather than one that is similar that could be newer.

7) Last, but certainly not least, check out all of the places you can find!  This will help you get an idea of good prices, conditions of complexes and different landlords.
