Research and Ask

Learn the basics of jewelry appraisal and know about the materials used in creating them. Read informational articles and browse through forums that discuss jewelry topics.

Authentic silver pieces should be marked as .925 or sterling. On the other hand, gold pieces can either be marked as gold filled, 18K or 14K.  For gemstones, check if the material used was treated, stabilized or naturally-made.

The item’s soldering points should be smooth and unnoticeable. Plated metals also tend to weigh less than genuine metals. An overall look of substandard craftsmanship can also indicate counterfeit.

Don’t be afraid to ask the jewelry dealer about the materials used in an item you’ve been eyeing to buy. Watch out for sellers that do not give out clear explanations. An authentic jewelry dealer should know what his items are made of.

Obtain a Certificate of Authenticity

Aside from providing you with a receipt, most authentic jewelry stores can provide you with an authenticity certificate which includes the original price of the jewelry, the discount given, a detailed description of the materials used and tribal affiliation of the jewelry artisan (for handmade items).
